Gouache has this really beautiful quality of being both transparent and opaque, depending on how you use it. This painting captures both.
Bold shadows are interrupted by swathes of light, touching the tops of citrus and flowing all around. If you look closely, you can see spots where I allowed puddles of watery gouache to dry, leaving a watermark. This reminds the viewer of the paint's natural quality, something that is often celebrated in abstract works.
